The British chapter of International PEN, an organization promoting literature and freedom of expression, put out a statement on their website, condemning the government persecution of Cuban writers. They’re launching a 2009 campaign for:
Release of prisoners
Improvement of prison conditions
Fair trials and access to lawyers
Law reform
Ratification of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Political Rights (ICESPR)
It is nice to see European intellectuals taking a stand for the plight of their Cuban colleagues, since in their sphere it’s decidedly unfashionable to criticize the Glorious Revolution.
