New page, after a battle.

page_33_final
Here’s Jorge back in his cell, contemplating the news his mother gave him. A pretty moody scene, it was fun to use lots of black, which I don’t do enough.

Persepolis remixed

persepolis2
Expat Iranians use images from Marjane Satrapi’s famous graphic novel to recount the recent events surrounding the disputed election. The Iranian government has tried to silence the protesters, who in turn have become more and more creative in their ways of voicing dissent in the face of repression.

Sketchup for comics

Google’s 3D modeling application Sketchup is what a good tool should be: Intuitive to learn, easy to use and best of all; free!

I’ve found Sketchup to be a huge help in imagining environments and as a guide for drawing. In the example of the visiting hall of Canaleta prison, I had Jorge describe the place for me. From his information I gleaned the approximate dimensions, the open air nature of the room with the chain link fence screens and the benches.

In under an hour I had the room built in Sketchup, using readymade elements such as the chain link and benches from the Sketchup “warehouse“, a user generated depository of items you can download. No sense in building a bench if 3 other people have already done it.

The purpose of using this tool is not so much the tracing, but the great help in determining “camera angles” when an environment’s relation to the subjects is important. (more…)

Reporters Without Borders ads

Form Reporters Without Borders 2008 report on Cuba:
The handover of power to President Castro’s brother has not seen any improvement in human rights. The form of repression has changed from political trials to daily brutality. Twenty journalists held since the “black spring” crackdown of March 2003 continue to serve sentences of between 14 and 27 years in prison. Three others have been jailed since Raúl Castro took over.Twenty of the 27 journalists arrested in the “black spring” crackdown of March 2003 continue to serve their sentences of between 14 and 27 years in prison.

Cover

cover_red

This is a mockup of the cover for the graphic novel. Who knows if it’ll end up being the published version, but I’ve had this idea for some time of featuring two arms, signifying Jorge’s loss but also a universal gesture of seeking help, rescue. It also functions as a P.O.V (point of view) as I naturally used my own arms as reference.

While observing my arms I felt so grateful for having them, these precious appendages we all use so much without realizing it. I admire Jorge tremendously for his ability to do as much as he does without them.

Yoani Sánchez

I have mentioned Yoani before on this blog, but I haven’t provided much information about her besides linking to her blog posts.

What makes Yoani so admirable and unique is that she is one of the few Cuban bloggers who post from Cuba without hiding her identity. I came across this Wall Street Journal article from 2007 that gives a good indication of what makes Yoani tick.
